Alliance for Climate and Energy
Germany and Morocco agree on an Alliance for climate and energy
Germany and Morocco are set to strengthen their collaboration on climate protection and the energy transition. Today, in Berlin, German Development Minister Svenja Schulze, Parliamentary State Secretary Stefan Wenzel, and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita signed a declaration to establish a joint alliance for climate and energy. This partnership will focus on enhanced cooperation in climate adaptation, the expansion of renewable energy, and the production of green hydrogen.
Key Points of the Alliance:
- Geographical Advantages: Morocco's location by the windy Atlantic and proximity to the desert provide excellent conditions for wind and solar energy generation, allowing it to meet domestic energy needs and potentially export green hydrogen to Germany.
- Fair Partnerships: Schulze emphasized the importance of establishing a fair green hydrogen economy, contrasting it with the fossil fuel economy. The goal is for both countries to benefit from this partnership while supporting Morocco's energy transition.
- Renewable Energy Leadership: Both nations are recognized as leaders in climate protection. Morocco has significant potential for renewable energy development, having already established a fruitful energy partnership with Germany over the past decade.
- Hydrogen Strategy: Morocco has introduced its own hydrogen strategy, supported by Germany, aiming to produce green hydrogen on an industrial scale. The first reference plant for green hydrogen production is being developed with German assistance, expected to produce 10,000 tons annually.
The new alliance aims to deepen cooperation in building a green hydrogen industry, electricity trading, national decarbonization efforts, climate adaptation, and workforce training. This initiative is seen as a positive step toward a respectful and mutually beneficial partnership between the two countries.
