Gas roadmap: MOR's strategic position
Gas roadmap: Morocco positions itself as an important energy transition corridor
Morocco will draw up a gas roadmap to develop its gas infrastructure over the next ten years. Specifically, the roadmap envisages the construction of domestic pipelines in the short term (2024-2027) to transport liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Tendrara and Anchois (Larache) gas fields to the national grid and industrial sites. In addition, several entry points for the import and storage of gas are to be put into operation simultaneously. An LNG terminal is to be built in the port of Nador West Med, along with a pipeline connecting it to the Maghreb-Europe pipeline (GME), and two other terminals are planned. The development of these pipelines and terminals should enable Morocco to “become a major bidirectional energy transit corridor between Africa, Europe and the Atlantic Basin”, according to Energy Minister Leila Benali. A flexible and agile LNG infrastructure should also facilitate the transportation of hydrogen via hydropipelines in the medium and long term. Gaz has an important role to play in Morocco's energy transition and, together with renewable energies, is set to replace coal in the electricity sector in the long term.
