Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline Finalises Route as Morocco Advances National Gas Infrastructure Plans
On May 15, the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, H.E. Dr. Leila Benali, announced that the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline project has reached a key milestone with the completion of the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) studies and the finalisation of the optimal route.
The Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline is one of Africa’s largest energy infrastructure projects, aiming to connect West and North Africa through a 6,000-kilometer natural gas corridor. With a capacity to transport up to 30 billion cubic metres of gas annually, the pipeline is expected to improve energy access for approximately 400 million people across 13 countries. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025, with phased completion projected over the next two decades.
To support this ambition and ensure seamless integration with the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline, Morocco has recently launched a Call for Expressions of Interest (CEI), inviting both national and international professional operators to contribute to the expansion and enhancement of its natural gas infrastructure.
This initiative includes the development of the country’s first Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal at the port of Nador West Med, the construction of a gas pipeline network connecting to the existing Maghreb-Europe Gas Pipeline, and the provision of natural gas to current and future power plants.
