KfW Strengthens Morocco’s Energy Transition with €130 Million Investment in Grid Modernization
Morocco’s national electricity company, ONEE, has recently obtained €300 million in financing from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the German development bank KfW to enhance its electricity transmission infrastructure and advance the country’s energy transition goals. The funding package includes €170 million from the EIB and €130 million from KfW and will be allocated to upgrading and expanding the national grid by 731 kilometers, while increasing its evacuation capacity by 1,850 MVA.
This investment forms part of ONEE’s ambitious roadmap totaling 220 billion Moroccan dirhams (approximately $21.7 billion) through 2030. The roadmap outlines a comprehensive strategy to modernise Morocco’s energy sector, improve grid reliability, and significantly increase renewable energy capacity. Of this, 177 billion dirhams are earmarked for the power sector, aiming to raise the installed capacity of renewable energy to 56% by the end of 2027.
