Morocco Advances to 6th Place in the CCPI 2026
Morocco has risen to 6th place worldwide in the 2026 edition of the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI), published on the sidelines of COP30. Praised as one of the top-performing countries in the CCPI, the Kingdom has climbed two spots compared to the previous year, reflecting its efforts in the fight against climate change.
Morocco received ratings ranging from “high” to “very high” in three of the four evaluated categories. The report highlights the country’s very low greenhouse gas emissions per capita and its strong energy performance. In addition, Morocco’s ambitious climate policy is emphasized, particularly following the revision of its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) and its plan to gradually phase out coal by 2040.
While acknowledging this progress, the CCPI report also encourages accelerating the deployment of solar and wind capacities and fostering a framework that enables greater citizen participation in green energy production. These measures could allow Morocco to further improve its ranking in future editions.
The Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) is an independent monitoring tool produced annually by the NewClimate Institute and the NGO Germanwatch, in partnership with the international network Climate Action Network (CAN). The ranking assesses countries’ performance in mitigating climate change.
