President Macron visits Morocco

The visit of President Macron to Morocco and its implications for the energy sector

During an official visit of French President Emmanuel Macron on October 28 and 29, 22 contracts worth a total of over 10 billion euros were signed between the two countries. Here is an overview of the most important projects targeting the energy sector:

  • Chbika project: This project aims to build 1 GW of solar and wind energy (onshore) to produce green hydrogen through seawater electrolysis, allowing an annual production of 200,000 tons of green ammonia. TE H2 (a joint venture between TotalEnergies and Eren Group) and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners are responsible for the development of the renewable electricity and hydrogen production; A.P. Møller Capital develops the port and related infrastructure.
  • Joint agreement on renewable energies between Engie and the OCP Group: This could generate investments of EUR 17 billion. The deal includes five renewable energy projects with flexible electricity storage, green ammonia production, infrastructure to connect OCP sites to the grid and a water desalination plant for agriculture.
  • Taza Wind Park: The project is being implemented by the National Office for Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) and EDF. It focuses on the development, financing, construction, operation and maintenance of the second phase of the Taza wind farm with an installed capacity of 63 MW.
