Re-evalution of the energy sector strategy
Electricity sector: Competition council recommends changes in the sector model
On April 26, 2024, the Moroccan Competition Council (“Conseil de la concurrence”) published a report on the state of the electricity sector and possible reforms. The Council proposes a profound change to the current sector model in order to meet challenges such as the growing demand for electricity, the need for decarbonization and the promotion of renewable energies. It recommends a decentralized model that promotes competition and attracts private investment. Clear regulations and an independent regulator are needed to monitor the market and ensure fair conditions. A transition to a competitive electricity market should be achieved through gradual liberalization and the promotion of renewable energies. According to the Competition Council, these measures should not only contribute to energy independence, but also to lowering electricity costs for consumers.
