Tanger Med inaugurates its first floating solar power plant

Morocco has just taken a new step in its energy transition with the inauguration of a floating solar power plant installed on the Oued Rmel dam reservoir near Tangier. This 13 MW facility now supplies green electricity to the Tangier Med port complex, one of the largest logistics hubs in Africa and the Mediterranean.

The technology used is based on floating photovoltaic panels installed on the surface of the dam. In addition to producing clean electricity, this system helps to reduce water evaporation. The Oued Rmel reservoir loses an average of 3,000 m³ of water per day, and twice that amount in summer. The floating panels could reduce these losses by 30%, thereby strengthening the country's water resilience.

Since the launch of the pilot programme, more than 400 floating platforms have already been installed. Ultimately, the project aims to install 22,000 panels covering 10 hectares of the reservoir. With this power plant, Tanger Med is accelerating its decarbonisation efforts. The port has set itself the goal of 100% renewable energy supply by 2030. Already equipped with a shore-side power supply system that allows ships to connect to locally produced energy, it is significantly reducing its pollutant emmisions.
